Hear us Out

Hear Us Out is an online programme which took place between 26th – 29th November 2020, celebrating older LGBTQ+ people’s real-life stories. You can now catch up with the full programme on the New Writing South YouTube channel.

About the project

Since 2019, New Writing South and a community collective of LGBTQ+ volunteers have been collecting the funny, touching and celebratory real-life stories of older LGBTQ+ people across the South East of England. Working with a company of local LGBTQ+ performers, these stories were turned into a digital performance as part of Hear Us Out, an online programme of events which took place at the end of November 2020.

Hear Us Out had to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic. The original plan for Hear Us Out was to take mini performances and events to community settings such as residential homes, day centres, libraries, museums and LGBTQ+ events. The project was then to culminate in a stage production written and directed by the project’s Artistic Director Dinos Aristidou at a mid-scale venue in Brighton. However, due to Covid-19 the project had to be adapted so that participants and audience members could get involved without leaving home.

Hear Us Out is supported by Arts Council England and The Baring Foundation’s Celebrating Age Fund.
