John McCullough celebrates his new collection, ‘Reckless Paper Birds’ at The Writers’ Place

Reckless Paper Birds is John’s third collection of poems and is published by Penned in the Margins. As the title suggests, it features many poems about birds, but is also especially interested in the fragility and resilience of the human body. It explores LGBT experience in terms of queer identity and homophobia, and the unique possibilities created by present-day Brighton as a city where people with alternative sexualities and genders can gather.

John McCullough is a poet and a creative writing tutor, teaching for the Open University, Arvon and the Creative Writing Programme. His poems have appeared in publications including Poetry Review, London Magazine, The Guardian, Poetry London and Best British Poetry. His first collection The Frost Fairs (Salt, 2011) won the Polari First Book Prize, and his second, Spacecraft, was one of The Guardian’s Best Books for Summer 2016.

The event will comprise a reading and a Q&A session – about Reckless Paper Birds, and about writing and editing poetry in general.
