The Writers’ Place: a poem by Dean Atta

The Writers' Place

Imagine a room full of people

Who care what you have to share

Imagine a room full of people

Who listen to you compassionately

Imagine a room full of people

Who show you respect at all times

Imagine a room full of words

That seek kind ears and find them

Imagine a room full of words

That seek open minds and hearts

Imagine a room full of words

Finding voice on page and stage

Imagine a room full of people

Imagine a room full of words

Imagine a room but now empty

The door says welcome as you

Hope a door would, the walls say

You are respected and understood

The chairs say community, the kitchen

Says get comfortable, the lights

Say purpose, the walls say page

If there are tables they say support

If there is a stage it says celebrate

And when others arrive you say

Welcome, you respect and seek

To understand, you make community

You make comfortable, you find common

purpose, on the page, on the stage

You support, and you celebrate.
