Writing and Self: Exploring and blurring the lines between fiction and autobiography in creative writing with Rosy Carrick
What does it mean to “write the self”, and how might we start to express ourselves in unusual and innovative ways? Which versions of ourselves are we happy to share, in any case, and which are we careful to keep hidden? And what happens when we start to bend the truth altogether…?
Through practical exercises and group discussion, you will complete this workshop with a diverse set of new approaches as we explore, unpick and generally muddy up the fine line between fiction and autobiography in creative writing.
About the tutor
Dr Rosy Carrick is a writer, performer and academic whose work charts an unusually eclectic trajectory. Her critically acclaimed play Passionate Machine won the awards for Best Design and Best New Play at Brighton Fringe in 2018, and The Infallibles Award for Theatrical Excellence at Edinburgh Fringe, before touring internationally throughout 2019. Her second play Musclebound, which focuses on the power and performance of female sexuality via tortured 80s beefcakes and frank conversations her daughter Olive, is on tour throughout 2024.
Rosy has a BA in English Literature and Creative Writing from The University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and an MA in Critical and Creative Writing from Sussex University. She has a PhD on the poetry of Vladimir Mayakovsky, and has released two books of his work in translation.

Between 2022 and 2024, she co-wrote a new videogame with ZA/UM studio, the makers of the explosively successful and multi-award-winning Disco Elysium.
Rosy’s debut poetry collection Chokey was published by Burning Eye in 2018; she is currently working on her second collection, I LOVE, as well as a new collection of Mayakovsky’s never-before-translated poetry for children.
