New Writing South launches new summer programme of activities March – July 2019

March 11, 2019
Brighton-Pier

This month’s key event, The Writers’ Day 2019, is the first of many opportunities for south east writers in this new packed programme of activities.  Over the spring and summer you will find a range of live events, workshops, masterclasses and retreats that respond to the diverse needs of writers living in the south east.

Whilst curating this programme, we have taken into consideration your feedback, both anecdotal and via responses to our recent survey. Your suggestions are already feeding in to our programme plans, and will continue to do so over the coming months.

What You Said: You wanted more workshops and masterclasses

What We Did:  We have re-designed and increased the frequency of our workshop programme. Workshops now average two per month, and there are many to choose from between March and July. Workshops are divided into the following categories – Craft (developing creative skills for aspiring and emerging writers) and Career (practical advice and skills to develop emerging writers’ creative careers).

What You Said: You wanted more activities to happen outside of Brighton

What We Did: We have programmed activities in Worthing, Horsham, Crawley, and Hastings in this season. We continue to build relationships with venues and organisations in other parts of the region and are exploring other ways to support writers across the region – watch this space!

What You Said: You wanted more activities to be free or low-price

What We Did: We are offering bursary places on all of our core activities.*  Some of our smaller events remain low-price at £5 or less, or are completely free.

What You Said: You wanted more opportunities for writers to meet and network

What We Did: In addition to The Writers’ Day, which is a brilliant opportunity for writers to meet and connect, we are running a series of Writers’ Retreats in Brighton over the summer months. These offer time and space to write with peace, refreshments, and a small group of other writers to keep you motivated. We are also planning networking and social events throughout the year so writers can connect on a regular basis.

The full Summer Programme will be released at the end of March. Make sure you are on our mailing list to receive programme news first. Selected activities are available to book now, including:

Running Brilliant Writing Workshops, with Evlynn Sharp (25 April).

Writers: Facing an Audience, with Tanushkah Marah (27 April)

Two Day Workshop: Theatre Writing with Communities, with Sara Clifford (11 and 12 May)

Writers’ Retreat (16 June)

Pitching Your Work and Marketing Yourself with Anna Burtt (18 July).
